I work from an empathic perspective with adults and adolescents in individual therapy in order to help clients sort out their inner lives and move from distress and confusion to clarity and greater ease.
My therapeutic approach aims to empower clients to understand how early relationships influence current life choices and current relationships. I then help clients apply that understanding to make life changes that they identify as important.
I have significant expertise on the integration of mindfulness techniques into the therapeutic process, and I do so when clinically appropriate and only when clients are interested in learning these techniques.
Clients have collaborated with me to successfully overcome depression, anxiety, anger, lack of purpose, and sexual issues. I assist individuals and couples in working through difficult transitions such as grief/loss, career change, separations, major illness, and lifecycle changes.
I have experience working with LGBTQ and curious clients on issues relating to gender identity, gender expression, and transition as well as issues of sexual orientation, sexual identity, and coming out. I am able to assist with difficulties pertaining to issues of adoption, workplace discrimination, harassment, less common relationship and family structures, struggles with family of origin, and living with HIV.
Many of my clients are motivated to enter treatment to heal the effects of physical abuse, sexual abuse/assault, or domestic violence. I am trained in several trauma-specific modalities such as EMDR and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to help people resolve acute trauma symptoms and foster post-traumatic growth.
